Virginia "Gin" R. Lockhart

Virginia “Gin” R. Lockhart, nee Krauss, 85, of Belleville, IL, born December 10, 1923, in Freeburg, IL, died Monday, August 24, 2009, at Freeburg Care Center, Freeburg, IL.

She was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.  She was also involved in many organizations, including Teamster’s retirees, Stag Brewery retirees, Belleville Senior Citizens, Swansea Moose Lodge 1221, and the VFW Auxiliary.

Mrs. Lockhart was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Basil Lockhart, who died June 10, 2000; her parents, Arthur and Edwina, nee Bauer, Krauss; four brothers, Arthur, Lester, Harvey (Mayme) and Verlan Krauss; and eight sisters, Florence (William) Stammer, Elsie (Raymond) Stapf, Lillian (Edward) Lawton, Pearl (Sam) Disheroon, Estella (Carl) Stiebel, Clara “Toots” (Kermit) King, Ruth (John) Irving, and Dorothy (Arthur) Nichols. 

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Edward “Skip”) Erkman and Cindy (Jim) McHaney, both of Belleville; four grandchildren, Jordan and Casey McHaney, Matt Erkman, and Kathy McDonald; two sisters, Bette Smythe and Lucille Harris, both of Freeburg; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, to the Belleville Area Humane Society, or in the form of Masses.  Condolences may be expressed to the family online at  

Visitation:  Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 27, 2009, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.           

Funeral:  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 27, 2009, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Father Nicholas Junker officiating. 

Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.
