Gordon Bien

Gordon D. Bien, 87, of Belleville, IL, born December 9, 1924, in Belleville, IL, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Rosewood Care Center, Swansea, IL.

Gordon retired as a marksman carpenter after 35 years in the field.  He also maintained a 65 year loyal membership in Carpenter’s District Council 433. 

Mr. Bien proudly and faithfully defended his country during World War II, serving as a corporal in the 4th Division, 14th Marine Regiment; Artillery.  During his tour of duty, he saw conflict on Saipan and Iwo Jima.  His duties included manning a 105mm howitzer.  He served as vice president of Chapter 29, 4th Marine Division Association.  He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Marine Corps League of Collinsville, IL.  Gordon was also a member of the St. Louis Mineral Society, the Belleville Senior Citizens Club, and a lifelong blood donor.  He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Rita O., nee Schmidt, Bien, whom he married on April 16, 1947 at St. Peter’s Cathedral; his parents, Anton and Hazel, nee Hermann, Bien; one brother, Raymond Bien; and one sister, Virginia Bocquet.

Patricia Bien of Belleville, IL,
JoAnn (Galen) Ford of Cape Girardeau, MO;
Toni (John) Hannon of Columbia, IL,
and Robert Bien of Belleville, IL;
12 grandchildren, Kelli (Derek) Tracey,
Alex (Jessica) Austerman, Kristina Temporiti,
John (Katie) Temporiti, Jr., Elizabeth (John) Cole,
Michael Temporiti, Kurt (Jammie) Campbell,
Holli Campbell, Nikki (Ron) Labbee,
Valerie (David) Page, Jennifer Hannon,
and Alan J. Hannon;
seven great-grandchildren, Jack and Alex Temporiti,
Warner Cole, Kevin Campbell,
Breann, Kalli and Skylar Labbee;
one sister, Laverne Feiling of Belleville, IL;
and four sisters-in-law, Martha Campbell of Swansea, IL,
Pauline (Alvin) Bietsch of Belleville, IL,
Mary Schmidt of Millstadt, IL,
and Minta Schmidt of Belleville, IL.

He will be deeply missed by numerous nieces, nephews, Marine comrades, and many friends who have been a part of his life.

Visitation:  Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, and from 8:00 to 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL. 

Funeral:  Funeral procession will leave at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. David Darin officiating.

Burial with military honors will be held at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL.
